The five winners were chosen from almost 100 participants in the “Lean Lab Genius” competition. The “CoLab” initiative will receive funding for the development of its innovative experimental laboratory in the form of training and consultancy services.
Geniu was once again represented with a stand at last year’s LABVOLUTION. Visitors to the trade fair were able to take part in the “Lean Lab Genius competition”. The aim of this competition was to identify possible inefficiencies in terms of “types of waste” in a short process that was shown in a video. The focus was on two of the seven types of waste that occur in both routine and research laboratories. The types of waste include, for example, unnecessary walking distances and transportation of samples and materials, complicated processes and waiting times.

A total of almost 100 participants from laboratories at companies, universities and research institutes took part in the competition to find out how well they recognize waste in the laboratory and are already a “Lean Lab Geniu”. Those who were best at spotting waste were able to win one of five prizes of EUR 500 each for consulting and training services from Geniu.
First place went to Tobias Hofmann from the “CoLab” initiative, which has already won an award in the “Science in Dialogue” (WiD) university competition organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. “CoLab” stands for Community Laboratory, which means “laboratory for the community”. CoLab plans to set up laboratory rooms in Kassel that offer a platform for research and experimentation. Not only will workshops, lectures and science slams be offered there in future, but space will also be created for people to conduct their own experiments. The aim is to give a wider public access to science according to their own needs and interests.
In the competition, Tobias almost exactly identified the waste types running and waiting in two process steps and was very close to the sample solution overall. Tobias, who took part in the competition with his colleagues: “You had to concentrate on correctly estimating the waste, but it was a lot of fun competing directly with my colleagues.”
We look forward to supporting “CoLab” in setting up the project!
