20 years of lean management in the laboratory
The year 2021 marks a milestone in the application of lean management in laboratories. After the first “Lean Lab” project in 2001 and thousands of projects in various laboratories worldwide, lean management is considered a “classic” for optimizing laboratories. Therefore, 20 years later, it is time to review the benefits of the successful application of Lean in laboratories and to motivate even more laboratories to take the path to greater performance and competitiveness.
In this study, we present the results of the research project and the meta-analysis on the benefits of lean management in laboratories. The results show that successful Lean Lab projects have significantly improved performance in at least one of the performance dimensions of productivity, quality or lead time.

The study “The Impact of Lean Lab” is the most comprehensive of its kind. It examines the application of lean management in the 20 years since the first Lean Lab project in 2021.
More than 100 publications were examined in detail. A meta-analysis empirically investigated the benefits of successful laboratory optimization with lean lab techniques in practice.
The study provides unique insights into the development and application of Lean Lab and the benefits of Lean in laboratories. A “must” for anyone who wants to establish lean in the laboratory.
