Lean management in the laboratory

The seminar is aimed at quality control managers, laboratory/team leaders, managers and responsible employees from quality control laboratories who want to optimize their laboratory in terms of costs, productivity, quality, reliability and throughput time.

LEARNING CONTENT

E-learning: Online course

Increasing work and sample volumes with the same laboratory team. Always new tasks and targets to fulfill? In order to successfully master these challenges, you should look into the possibilities of laboratory optimization with Lean. Lean, with its established lean techniques, has been used with great success not only in industry, but also in numerous laboratories. In this seminar, you will not only learn the basics of lean (e.g. 5S and waste) but also how to apply lean management in your laboratory. In practical exercises, you will develop starting points for laboratory optimization with Lean for your laboratory. The training also includes numerous practical examples and ideas for digitalization, which will give you food for thought for implementation in your laboratory. You can also discuss laboratory optimization with the participants and the speaker.

PROGRAM

The following 5 principles form the core of Lean

Contents of the event: Day 1

Basics of lean management in the laboratory

  • What lean really means: lean basics and principles
  • The benefits of lean workflows in the laboratory – case studies and study results
  • Improving costs, quality and time: the “magic triangle” of laboratory optimization
  • Connection between Lean, Six Sigma, Total Quality Management (TQM)

Lean techniques and tools for quality control laboratories

  • Introduction to lean techniques in the laboratory
  • The 3Ms of lean management
  • Types of waste in the laboratory
  • Get to know lean techniques and tools, e.g.
    • Value stream mapping
    • Waste analysis
    • Route analysis
    • 5S method
    • Standard processes
    • Kanban
    • 5-Why
    • FMEA
    • Ishikawa or herringbone model
    • Others: Kaizen, Gemba, Swimlane diagram, Poka Yoke
  • Exercise: Learn what you can achieve with which lean tools in the lab. Apply what you have learned in the workshop and practice choosing the right tool for your challenges in the lab!

Applying lean in the lab – Part 1: Defining goals

  • What are your challenges and goals in the lab?
  • Context Goals, starting points for lean, lean techniques
  • How to concretize goals: Lean analyses, balanced scorecard and benchmarking
  • Exercise: What are your challenges in the lab? Define your goals.

Applying lean in the lab – Part 2: Recognizing opportunities for improvement

  • What are promising starting points for improvement with Lean?
  • Presentation of application examples e.g.
  • Exercise: Determine how good your transparency of improvement opportunities is in your laboratory and define initial improvement topics.

Group discussion and exchange of experience on laboratory optimization (optional evening program):

  • You can send questions and topics to the speaker before the event
  • Exchange experiences and problems in implementation with the participants
  • Discuss your individual questions with the speaker
  • Learn from the experiences of others/moderated by the speaker
Contents of the event: Day 2

Applying lean in the lab – Part 3: Selecting suitable lean tools

  • Which tools are suitable for analyzing and implementing improvement opportunities?
  • Presentation of possible applications of lean tools
  • Exercise: Prioritize possible improvement topics and select suitable lean tools

Shaping lean transformation in the lab

  • Process of a lean transformation
  • Case studies of successful lean transformations in the laboratory
  • Exercise: Create your lean transformation plan in an interactive exercise

Success factors for lean projects – key figures and more

  • What are the success factors for successful lean projects in the laboratory?
  • What mistakes should you avoid? Why is a laboratory with 5S a start but still far from lean?
  • Key Performance/Quality Indicators (KQIs/KPIs) to measure progress
  • Change management and project management (incl. PDCA cycle)

Lean and digitalization in the quality control laboratory

  • The connection between lean and digitalization: using similarities effectively
  • Industry 4.0 trends that are changing the laboratory
  • Which technologies/applications are worthwhile for use in the laboratory?
  • Procedure for identifying and evaluating potential applications
